The question that drives a majority of my research is, "how are
decisions made / rules established in families where domestic violence
is present?" As a result of this foundational interest, I focus
primarily on the events that occur after a woman has decided to leave
an abusive partner. Therefore, I am currently investigating how
health communication and technology intersect to assist survivors
attempting to exit a violent relationship.
Specifically, I am interested in utilizing innovative telemedicine
technologies to provide social services and medical interventions to
victims of violence. This is an incredibly understudied area that has
limitless potential for women and children in hard to reach locations
(e.g. rural shelters).
Regarding community involvement - I began my career as a sexual
assault peer advocate (SAPA) at Central Michigan University. After
completing my undergraduate degree I worked for Relief After Violent
Encounter (RAVE) in Clinton and Shiawassee counties at their domestic
violence shelter. My training in advocacy, critical and feminist
theory, and qualitative methodology have all contributed to the
scholarship I currently engage in as a doctoral student at MSU."
